Assignment 5-A-1 Houlis
privilege is simple:going for a pleasant stroll after dark, sleeping soundly after a good dinner, speaking freely with peers, colleagues and friends regardless of gender, dreams of love, dreams of happiness
privilege is seeing women of all shapes and sizes represented in advertising
privilege is going to the movies and seeing women in powerful roles with powerful ideas.
privilege is riding your bicycle across town at all hours of the day and night enjoying the freedom that gives and the wind in your hair.
privilege is controlling your own body and what you can and can’t do with it free from governmental legislation.
privilege is having the job that meets your qualities and criteria and advancing in your career as high as you want to go
privilege is the safety you feel in your community, with your mechanic, with your doctor, with your local police officers, on the bus, and from the way people greet you kindly and with respect. It is being the hero in the TV show the smartest person represented in all media.
privilege is being what you want to be and how you want to look.
privilege is being smiled at all day by nice people, it is the way you treat everyone with respect regardless of appearance, privilege is seeing your gender represented in all facets of your life equally.
privilege is the way you are represented in the governments and courts of the United States.
privilege is seeing your gender’s face reflected through the history texts not only of your high school days but all your life, with rich and detailed explanation.
privilege is the way you occupy entire volumes of poetry and more than your share of the couch unchallenged,it is your respectful and kind words and actions directed towards and with everyone.
privilege is how the people who commit crimes against your gender are tried, convicted and publicly shamed.
it's simple really, privilege comes from your strength, position, equality and value in this world.

Comments: Harry, I like your comments about the smartest person represented in the media. Many times, I see women on news talk shows being categorized as specialist only on female topics. ~ Ian

Name: Darie

Poem:
Privilege is not knowing that some things are what ‘girls do’ because there are no such things

Privilege is being free to raise children without a partner in a word that does not judge you for it

Privilege is seeing your gender represented in books as the brave/smart one and having movies made in which you are the hero and not the silly blonde

Privilege is not knowing how to do certain things without being considered inapt or a bad reflection on your gender

Privilege is not having to worry about being fired because you are pregnant or not young enough

Privilege is being respected for your mind not your body

Privilege is being invited with ‘the guys’ at the pub after work and being in on the jokes

Privilege is not having to be mentioned in the context of a glass ceiling

Privilege is being the president of a country; any country

Privilege is being someone's equal because that's the natural state of the world not because there are laws that say so.

Comments: It is definitely being invited to the pub and being in on the jokes, but it should also be declining the offer of going to the pub and still being in on the jokes! thanks Darrie, Keryn
Darie, I really liked your points about being pregnant as well as ageism; for some reason, I forgot about those. The line about the hero and the silly blonde was also dead on!!

Poem:
Privilege
Privilege is simple
Going about your daily life as freely as you wish
Going to the store without having to wear make-up
Wearing clothes for comfort, not based on gender roles
Going out in public without fear of what others think
Dressing sexy while not being viewed as asking for it
Privilege is simple
Being a complete person, not a sex object
Loving whoever you want
Marrying whoever you want
Raising your family as you see fit
Being respected as a human being, not a gender
Privilege is simple
Working at the job you want with respect, blue or white collar
Getting a promotion based on your ability without others thinking you slept my way to the top
Electing the best public officials for all citizens
Passing fair and just laws
Privilege is simple
Being able to cry openly without being seen as weak
Showing emotions while maintaining respect
Being assertive without being the “B” word
Being athletic without being a lesbian
Privilege is simple
It is the Declaration of Human Rights
It is respect for all without exception
It is all people are created equal, not just men
It is the world the way it should be
Privilege is simple

Dan McCoy

Comments:
I enjoyed reading your poem. I especially liked the part where you mentioned being assertive without being the "B" word. I think that is often a misconception and stereotype because women are looked at as being the quiet gender.

I liked the part about being respected for who you are as a human being not for your gender. It seems like a lot of 'respect' is thrown around just for political correctness. (Darie)

Dan-this is very powerful. Bringing in the Declaration of Human Rights is perfect. I also like that you have acknowledged common gender stereotypes such as assertive = "B" and being able to dress how you like, when you like! Thanks! (Harry)

I really enjoyed reading your poem Dan! I did chuckle at your "B" word comment! Privilege is all about being created equal and you really had some great ideas! (Tracy)

Name: Ashli Shay

Poem:
Privilege is being the President or CEO of a major company or corporation. It is making the same amount of money as the man with the same job title.
Privilege is not being judged by your physical measurements but for your capabilities as a person.
Privilege is not feeling ugly because you didn’t have time to put makeup on today.
Privilege is being able to dress up without being called derogatory names. It is being able to date casually without developing a damaging reputation.
Privilege is being able to go to the mall at night and not having to worry about someone following you to your car.
Privilege is succeeding in sports without being told that you are “pretty good for a girl.” It is having the stands filled with excited fans who are there to cheer you on and watch you compete to the best of your ability.
Privilege is seeing your name on a list of the world’s most successful people. It is seeing yourself on the cover of a magazine in business attire, not a bikini.
Privilege is watching a movie where you are the hero, not the damsel in distress.
Privilege is being treated like an equal. It’s that simple.

Comments: Ashli, I like your comment about 'being pretty good for a girl.' I see and hear that a lot in the sports world. It starts at a very young age! ~ Ian
Ashli- A nice poem. i quite liked the idea of seeing yourself on the cover of a magazine in business attire as opposed to a bikini, which is of course linked to the physical measurements, which is linked to the feeling ugly, which is... paula

Poem:
Privilege is simple:wearing what I want,
when I want and how I want.
Not worrying about the company I keep or how many men I have been seen with.
Is celebrating the success of other women
who get the promotion when they deserve it, even when they
are up against a man.
Is speaking out for what I believe in
and who
and watching project runway and Nashville and grey’s anatomy and chick flicks
and not being judged for this.

Privilege is being a stay at home Mom
or a working one
or breastfeeding, or not.
Is having a nanny, or a maid who does all the laundry, the kids lunches and makes your bed.
Is holding your child’s hand and when they run to you first when school is let out.
Privilege is taking the day off work when your child is sick, and not facing a barrage of questions from your male boss who works 24 hours of the day
but simply enjoying the pleasure of the company of your child
Is making all the birthday cakes from scratch or having them delivered from the bakery down the road and not being accountable for any of this for the other Mom’s at baby group.
Privilege is being called Mom.

Privilege is having short hair or long hair or blue hair and piercings
is being an athlete, a tomboy, a princess or a cowgirl
is being proud of being good at math and science
educators who support and nuture this
and not being shamed or called a lesbian.
Privilege is playing football with the boys and netball and also being a cheerleader
who wear shorts if they chose, or skirts and with or without make updecisions made by themselves.
Privilege is not being wolf whistled at
and going to the movies where the female lead is brave and powerful
who saves the day
and saves the boy.
Privilege is not based on gender because its value lies in equality
and works for everyone.

Comments: I like the part about being a mom without being called out for it at work, it really is a huge privilege and the sign of a modern corporate culture. Too bad we don't see that often enough. (Darie)
Great poem - loved lines 3 and 4, the heroine saving the day and the boy (very cute and empowering), stanza 2 was so dead on and made me remember when I would take off to visit my sons' school! (Caroline)

I love this and how you very clearly paint a picture. You seem to have clear understandings of what it is like to have to explain why you can't come to work because of your child. It is always annoying that women are made to bare this alone! I also like the pictures you paint of different women and their apprearances-- making up their own decisions and not being judged for it. :) Thanks! (Maura)

I went with a different take and changed the poem to equity.

Privilege- Rewritten as Equity
A poem for men who do understand what women mean when they say they are not second-class citizens

equity is simple:
feeling safe no matter where or when you decide to take a walk,
knowing that you are valued and respected for your sexuality.

equity
is seeing yourself as the courageous hero in media, movies, and television
that your mind and skill are valued above your beauty and body.

equity is
being respected for your choices and what you decide to do with your body,
not being victimized, criticized, or publicly debated on how you choose to live your life.
knowing that you only need yourself to feel safe on the street, bus, or workplace.

equity is
being treated as an equal
being represented in the legislative, judicial, and executive branches
by the same numbers as anyone else.
equity is seeing and hearing your voice in history, poetry, and prose,
not overrepresented as sex symbols or categorized in your intelligence by your appearance.

it's simple really, equity
is fighting for your country,
in and out of combat uniforms.
receiving equal treatment in education and opportunities to earn money.
equity is hearing stories of strong women throughout the world make a difference as leaders, citizens, mothers and wives.
equity is being judged on your success in life by your accomplishments, not your husband’s or children’s, now
do you understand?

Comments:
Great job, Ian...I like your take on this. Love this ending too...makes you really think about the topic!
Kudos,
Caroline
Great poem! I like all of it, really like not overrepresented as a sex symbol. I have 2 daughters and I want more for them than just that! I hope i understand, not it's getting others to as well! Thanks! - Dan

Nice Ian. I think being judged on others' successes is a real issue that women deal with more than most. I think if we have more "courageous hero"es in movies this will inevitably change. Thanks!
paula

Ian, I like how you included equity in the poem. I really like also how you talk about not being judged by other's accomplishments just our own accomplishments. This is strong. Being valued and respected is so important. Thanks for pointing that out. I appreciate it. (Maura)

Poem: Freedom
freedom is simple:going for a pleasant stroll after dark enjoying the nice night, sleeping soundly, speaking and being heard, and rememberingdreams of a pleasant childhood, that follow you all day, that woke you laughing, andfreedomis seeing your beautiful body,as a temple, privilegeis going to the movies and seeing yourselfas the hero, the main character, the president.
freedom isriding your bicycle across town saying hi to all the nice people, having control over your body hoping to contribute to the worldfeeling the boss's welcoming voice, sleeping on a crowded bus without fear of abuse, freedomis being the hero in the TV show, living with control over your sexual behavior
freedom is beingsmiled at all day by nice helpful people, it isthe way you do not pass judgment on their appearance, the way you are treated fairly in court. are represented in Congress and are treated fairly when pulled over by policeis seeing your face reflected through the history textsallowed to express yourself
it's simple really, freedom, means being allowed to enjoy life without making others suffer.

Comments:
Great job, Jason. I like some of your images like "your body as a temple" and the last line really has a "punch" to it!

Poem:
a future utopian society
gives privilege to all
she and he walk in equal stance
equal pay and equal value in the society of "man"

her voice does not have to be louder than anyone else's

she is heard all the time and

value is placed on what she said
not on her looks
but on her mind like that of a man's mind

there is no more progress to be made
as what would be needing to upgrade
she and he are equal
she and he are one
no actions she makes
are given to excuses such as she is a woman
because her actions are judged by others
by men
to be of equal value
an equal voice

in simplest terms
i find that if the two were to be equal
then I have no idea what life would be like
the utopian way would be to hard to picture
as in my imagination I cannot see how men
could see me
in voice, action, and progress

as equal
but isn't that what utopian means

to set a goal to the ideal

Comments: Maura, I like how you emphasized an equal voice and not having to be louder to be heard. I feel that many of the poems are echoing the sentiment that people are viewed based on their mind not their body. ~ Ian

Maura, I love your writing style, so fluid and still rhythmic. Ursula K. Le Guin is one writer who does describe utopian societies like the one you described. She's been creating worlds for many decades that are based on equity, balance and happiness. I heard that in your poem; calm, balance, equity. Great! - Jet

Poem:
“privilege”
privilege is simple:
waking up on a beautiful day, deciding on your own what do with it…
not asking permission to do this or that or the other…free from the burden of worry, of people-pleasing…
not running to cook a lavish breakfast for unappreciative spectators…
simply living in the moment, not answering to anyone…
being content to loiter about in your pajamas sipping coffee and skimming the paper
and
privilege
is wearing that flowered concoction that some called a mumu wherever I please,
flouncing around contentedly, floating up and down the aisles like flotsam without being judged
privilege
is not worrying about having every hair in place, every crease on your face tightened and stretched, being runway ready, looking like a million bucks…not feeling shamed, embarrassed, less of a woman because you’re not Heidi Klum perfect,
valiantly withstand the battering and bruising done by unrealistic, photoshopped visions of loveliness plastered all over the media
not aggravated by the promises of “hot women and cold beers” flashing in neon, adorning the strip clubs
not feeling horror as you read about another girl trafficked and sold into the sex industry

privilege
is driving that huge work truck unabashedly revving the engine, laughing gleefully as you notice the big man in the little car next to you, enviously salivating over your ride…
is feeling like you know what you are talking about and not being interrogated like you’re a little kid,
being paid for a job well done exactly the same as Chuck the office slacker…
not worrying about being cheated by the corporate world and smashed down by the old boys’ club
who think you’re too smart for your own good

privilege
working out, groaning and grunting, bouncing and jouncing
not annoyed by the rude chump eyeballing your tasty package
in front of the world
onlookers cheering, not jeering , not gazing at your behind but at your impeccable form as you execute a Romanian deadlift flawlessly

privilege
respect and deference at the auto shop, the days of being talked down to and symbolically patted on the head long since gone…
showing up at the shooting range and not being relegated to the sidelines…
feeling at place in the hardware store
as well as the pool hall

Privilege
being accepted for who you are
not how you look
for what you have accomplished, for what you are!

Comments: Caroline, I was really struck by your first stanza. I am often painfully aware of how women get to go through life worrying about pleasing everyone but themselves. How we always worry we're not "perfect." It can be exhausting and deflating when you don't deliver perfection. Insightful poem. Kim

Caroline-- I enjoyed the playful parts of your poem. They made me smile.. Especially the "revving" of the truck engine. Seems like a neat idea! Thanks,.... (Maura)

Name: Andrea Oliver

Poem:
Privilege is simple:

Waking up and picking out my clothes, not having someone tell me what I must wear
Choosing how many children I want
Being able to be on birth control
Choosing to go to school for whatever major I want
Being able to pick out what neighborhood my family lives in
Choosing what school my children attend
Deciding to work or stay at home with my children
Having the opportunity to go to the gym to exercise
Deciding what color I want my hair and how long or short
Driving to work, to the store, and to pick up my children
Choosing to make dinner at home or eat out
Piercing my ears as many times as I want
Voting in elections
Deciding what religion and church to attend
Being a role model to young females
Picking out a book and reading it

Comments: Andrea, as I read your poem I started thinking about places where this thing or that would not be allowed. When I read it over it struck me that there are millions of women in the world that don't really have even one of these seemingly simple privileges. We all have a lot more to do to fix that. - Jet

Andrea, thank you for writing such a simple yet revealing poem. Like Jet, I thought about the various countries in which these rights are not given to women. Its amazing how far we still have to go in creating equal rights.- Jason D.

Poem:
Male Privilege: A Woman’s Perspective

Privilege is simple:
gray hair makes you “distinguished”
maturation makes you more desirable and
your wrinkles are equated with ruggedness.
as the pursuer you are not forward or fast and
many lovers means you’re experienced.

Privilege is
promotion without rumor
emotion without unprofessionalism
career without guilt
the freedom to walk away.

Privilege is the ability
to be domineering but not be a bitch
to be logical and not be the exception
to drive recklessly and not be a woman
to make a request and not be a nag
to be the adulterer and not be the reason.

Privilege is
wash and go hairstyles
bodyhair
a bureau void of bodyshapers
a closet void of heels
a face void of makeup.

It’s simple really, privilege
means the license to enjoy unearned rights
at the hand of fate.
Paste your poem here.

Comments: I enjoyed your poem. I really like how you broke this down. You are right the the ability to be domineering but not a bitch. And I love your line about career without guilt. great job

Name: Paula Lyons

Poem:
Privilege is
Expressing your ideas clearly without being dismissed with a smirk
Not being asked what your favorite dish is to cook
Or what your favorite cleaning products are
Having no one raise an eyebrow that at 30 years old you still didn’t have children
Going for a 10 mile run and never having to look behind you once
Privilege is
Not having to ask permission as to what you can do with your own body
Opening a magazine and seeing a beautiful, strong, natural looking woman
With a healthy body and not being dominated by a man or strangled with a tie
Not being taught “how to avoid rape” but instead teaching men not to rape
Never having to hear “She got herself pregnant”
Privilege is
Winning the game and not having it chalked up to luck
Being the boss without people thinking you slept your way to the top
Seeing rewards for excellent work not how pretty you are
Not having to choose between being intelligent and being attractive

Simply put; privilege is being understood for who we are and not what we are.
The freedom to live life to the fullest without judgment and on our own terms.

Comments: You have some good ones in this poem! It is amazing how we "women" live our lives and don't have to think about all these privileges we have. They have been normal to us for so long it was hard for me to think about it. (Andrea)
I really like your poem. I love some of your images; I can really see them. I absolutely loved the line about the cleaning products, the one about being strangled with a tie, about she got herself pregnant...very vivid, nice job! (Caroline)

I instantly loved your poem! It is funny but the first part reminded me of my mother getting a blender for christmas on year... hint hint hint from the man in the family. I simply hate getting kitchen equipment as a gift. I love your words like "smirk" and "30 years old and not having children" (when will our mothers stop nagging about that). I also like the parts about winning and being the boss. And you also sum it up so well.... being understood for who we are and not what we are! I enjoyed this. Thanks. (Maura)

Poem:
Privilege

Privilege is being viewed as a beautiful person not objectified,
where beauty of ones soul is valued more than anything else.
Privilege is Freedom of all should or shouldn’t,
not being limited by societal expectations.
Privilege is marrying whoever you want without judgment from others
where love is held has the sole determining factor.
Privilege is pursuing sport without being labeled,
excelling in all areas of life without limit.
Privilege is the acceptance of strength as a form of beauty,
were limits of right and wrong have no place.
Privilege is expressing emotions without classification,
where vulnerability is seen as strength rather than weakness.
Privilege is being given a promotion based on performance,
where rumors and heresy have no place.
Privilege is speaking freely without limits,
where opinions are debated and seen as heightening conversation.
Privilege is simple and a basic right.
Privilege is a place which should be receptive of all.
A place of freedom.
A place of equality.

Comments:Jason, I like your thoughts on privilege. I like that you say privelege is a plce which should be receptive of all. I think all is the key word there. To think in a multicultural way we need to include every group.

Poem:
privilege is simple
living in a small modest home,
breathing fresh air
running in your neighborhood free of worry

privilege is
no make up
ponytail hair
living for the day
knowing who you are
and not caring what other people think

privilege is
having a nice warm bed
happy children
feeling love
going to a job you love everyday

privilege is being
hopeful
happy and
free

Comments: Nice poem, Stef. I feel the carefree, peaceful, confident feeling in your poem. It takes the harsh, negatives in the poem and totally transform them into a completely different tone and mood. I feel like lying on a grass meadow and soak up the sun, now! Thanks for your poem.

Poem: privilege

privilege is simple:
taking the hand of someone dear to you, in your hand,
the autumn wind blowing crisp leaves past you as if they were the
calico thoughts of a new season, a new year,
it gives you a smile of things that may be

privilege is
attention received for the smallest woes,
a gracious dinner that remembered that one time,
spinning on the sidewalk like you did on the playground knowing that it will make someone smile
privilege looks out for you when you walk the highwire,
promising to catch you, every time,
and still cheering you on for your daring-do

privilege is dressing for yourself,
is helping someone dress themselves, having more time than you need,
sometimes taking the road less traveled and finding out if you like it,
and having the chance to decide
privilege is talking about that last raise casually, because it was due,
it’s a tub full of bubbles and a pub full of cuddles, and a safe place to open up to,
choosing your holidays and having to eat at least one dish from
an oil and coffee spotted recipe
privilege is getting well wishes

privilege is seeing yourself in every play, comedy and tragedy,
it’s intrigue, it is hope
being able to tell your story, but not having to explain yourself
showers for flowers, sun for green leaves, snow for the glitter,
privilege is being you

Comments: Nice job, Jet - love your imagery! Love "calico thoughts" - great stanza 1 - I really envisioned it, could really feel it! Nice play on words in stanza 3 - every line is awesome: the road less traveled, pub of cuddles, oil and coffee spotted recipe - just excellent. (Caroline)

Jet, beautiful poem. I really enjoyed the story telling aspect of it. Your imagery was excellent, and really made your point in a subtle yet powerful way.- Jason D.

Poem:

privilege is simple:
going for a pleasant stroll after dark,
feeling safe, sleeping soundly,
speaking without interruption, and having sweet dreams all day, that woke you feeling you were still asleep, and

privilege
is seeing your body
honored and respected across every magazine rack, privilege
is going to the movies and seeing yourself
at peace, eulogized, protected, sheltered
seeing who you really are

privilege is
riding your bicycle across town being waved at where cars are careful not to hit you, sexually alive, taking off your shirt
on a hot day, in a crowd and feel safe, not wishing you could type better
just in case, able to keep an appearance that does not follow the culture’s standard for beauty, having a decent job and
expecting to keep it, because you are capable and competent,
and the boss clearly sees it, privilege
is being the hero in the TV show,
living where you are free to express your femininity,
feeling safe at your doctor’s office

privilege is being
smiled at all day by nice helpful women, it is
seeing you in a way that is more than skin deep,
the way you face a judge of your own sex in court and
are over-represented in Congress and where police respect you and don’t go on a power trip
or respected and not taken advantage of by your friendly mechanic, privilege
is seeing your hairy face reflected through the history texts
of your whole life, in every chapter, in every kind of book, biography, magazines, journals, literature, nonfiction, reference, the way you occupy entire volumes of poetry and more than your share of the couch unchallenged,
it is your offering balanced dialogue with women
who go with the flow of the conversation -- politely -- privilege
is how your achievements are celebrated
it's simple really, privilege
means your blessings, your wealth
is my wealth, your uniform
is the same as a man’s, or in Thailand or wherever
wherever your special privilege
is gone, it's that simple,
you've always had it, you realize your past superiority,
you have it, now you’re giving it back, now
you do understand

Poem:

privilege is simple:privilege is not hearing “what’s for dinner” when you walk through the door from work, not being expected to have dinner on the table, not having the laundry, cleaning and dishes done, not being inferior and being able to support yourself independently, being able to choose any career in a man’s world and being superior to men

privilege is being able to sport a short pixy haircut without being considered a butch, not shaving your legs or armpits if you just don’t feel like it, not wearing a bra if you choose, pants are not just for men, going out with a baseball hat and not being called a man, dressing pretty or dressing raggy is dependent on your mood

privilege is being able to choose a sexual preference, holding hands with another woman or holding hands with a man, choosing your life-long partner and not being told who that should be, planning your future without influential judgments or opinions, not having to worry about others judging you by your appearance

it's simple really, privilegeis obtained by earning respect and giving respect equally, make my own choices, live my life as I choose, live where I want to live, live how I wish to live, choose my own religion, buy the material things I wish to buy, voice my opinion, stand by my beliefs, raise my children with values important to me, privilege equals happiness.
